Can Claude Design Generate Images? Not on Its Own, but It Can Call an Image Connector

Ask Claude Design for a photo and it answers "I can't generate photos", then leaves an empty frame. It can still use the connectors you set up on claude.ai, and an image connector changes the answer.
On October 8, 2026 we tested all three ways to get a real image into a Claude Design project: upload a file, paste an image URL, and have Claude Design call the Claude Imagine connector to generate one.

Tested in a real Claude Design project  ·  Screenshots unedited apart from cropping  ·  Independent tool, not affiliated with Anthropic

What Claude Design Does When You Ask for a Photo

We asked for three product cards and "a product photo of a kraft paper coffee bag" in each. The reply: "I can't generate photos, so the three new product cards below the hero have empty image spaces where the bag photos go." Each card got a dashed frame with the brief written inside and a browse files link.

Layouts, Not Pixels

Anthropic describes Claude Design as a tool for designs, prototypes, slides and one-pagers, built as code.

The Brief Stays in the Frame

Each placeholder keeps its description, so you know which photo goes where.

Way 1: Upload a Photo and It Builds the Page Around It

We attached a product photo to the first prompt and asked for a coffee roaster's landing page hero. Claude Design put the photo on the right half and said it took the colours "from the photo: sage green, linen beige and warm brown".

Best for Photos You Already Have

Brand shots, product photos, anything on your disk.

You Need the File First

If the picture does not exist yet, you have to make it somewhere else.

Way 2: Paste an Image URL Into the Chat

We pasted a link to an image on our CDN and asked for it in the first card. Claude Design fetched it and replied: "I've put your photo on the Huila, Colombia card, and the page loads without errors. It fills the card and is cropped to fit." Two more links in one message filled the other cards.

Best for Images Made Elsewhere

Any public image link works, including the URL an image generator returns.

Two Tools Open

You generate in one place and paste the link into another.

Way 3: Let Claude Design Call an Image Connector

The + menu in Claude Design's chat has Manage connectors. It lists GitHub plus the connectors already set up on your claude.ai account, with the note "Configured Claude.ai connectors will also be available here." Our Claude Imagine connector showed as Connected with no setup inside Claude Design.

Nothing to Install in Claude Design

Connect it once on claude.ai and it appears here.

One Credit Balance

Images made in Claude Design draw from the same Claude Imagine credits as claude.ai and the website.

The Result: A Generated Photo, Placed in the Card

We asked it to use the claudeimagine connector and GPT Image 2.5 for a kraft coffee bag with a Sage & Linen label. It called generate_image, put the photo in the first card and reported "The generation cost 3 credits." The task took 94 seconds in our log, and the reply linked the full-resolution file.

The Label Came Out Right

The bag reads "Sage & Linen" as asked; the model added small extra text below it.

Framing Is Adjustable

The card is taller than the square photo, so Claude Design trimmed the sides and noted that a double-click changes the framing.

How to Add an Image Connector to Claude Design

About two minutes, and you do it once. Claude Design is in beta on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans.

1

Add the Connector on claude.ai

Open Customize → Connectors, choose Add, then Add custom connector, and paste https://claudeimagine.com/api/mcp. Sign in once.

2

Open Claude Design

Go to claude.ai/design and open a project or start a new one.

3

Check Manage Connectors

Click + in the chat box, then Manage connectors. The connector is listed under claude.ai connectors.

4

Ask for the Image by Name

"Use the claudeimagine connector to generate a photo of ... and put it in the first card." Name a model if you want a specific one.

Three Ways to Get Images Into Claude Design, Compared

All three worked in our test. Which one fits depends on whether the image already exists.

Upload a File

One step when you already have the photo. Claude Design reads it and can match the page to its colours.

Paste an Image URL

Worked first time with a public link. Handy when the image lives on a CDN or comes from a generator.

Call an Image Connector

The only way that goes from brief to placed photo without leaving Claude Design. Each image costs credits.

What a Connector Image Costs

With Claude Imagine at the default size: 3 credits for GPT Image 2.5, 5 for Nano Banana 2, 1 for Z-Image. Our test image cost 3.

Third-Party Hubs

Some guides route a design through a separate hub so ChatGPT can add images. A connector you already use on claude.ai skips that extra service.

Which Image Model to Ask For

GPT Image 2.5 stayed closest to the brief in our model test; Nano Banana 2 is faster; Z-Image is the cheapest for drafts.

Give Claude Design an Image Model

Connect Claude Imagine on claude.ai once and Claude Design can use it too. A new account starts with 9 credits, and your first connection adds 6.
