Claude Image Upload Limit: 20 per Message, and What Happened at 101 in One Chat
Does Claude have unlimited image uploads? No. Anthropic's documentation caps claude.ai at 20 images per message and 10 MB and 8000 × 8000 pixels per image. A per-chat ceiling is not documented.
On October 9, 2026 we tested both on a Max plan: a 21st image in one message was refused, while a single chat took 101 images over seven messages.

20 Images per Message
Anthropic's vision documentation sets claude.ai at 20 images per message. The app enforces it before anything uploads.
10 MB and 8000 × 8000 px per Image
Each image can be up to 10 MB on claude.ai and up to 8000 × 8000 pixels.
JPEG, PNG, GIF and WebP
Those four formats are supported. For an animated GIF, Claude only sees the first frame.
"20 Files per Chat" Is Per Message in Practice
The Help Center's upload page lists up to 20 files per chat. In our test the 20 limit applied to each message, and one chat held 101 images.
No Published per-Chat Image Cap
Neither official page gives a per-chat image limit. Long chats are still bounded by Claude's context window and your plan's usage limits.
API: 100 or 600 per Request
100 images per API request on 200k-context models and 600 on the others. Above 20 images in one request, each image must be 2000 px or smaller.
What Happens When You Add a 21st Image to One Message
We selected 21 numbered test images at once. claude.ai rejected the whole selection, attached none of them, and showed: "You can add at most 20 attachments to a message. Please select fewer attachments." Selecting 20 worked.
Split Into Two Messages
Send 20, then the rest. Claude can still see the earlier images in the same chat.

A grid of four screenshots is one attachment. Keep text large enough to read after resizing.
Does Claude Have a Maximum Image Count per Chat?
Some users report a "maximum image count" error after about 100 images in one chat. We sent numbered test images in seven messages of up to 20 each. The 101st image went through and Claude replied normally. We tested one Max-plan account on October 9, 2026, and did not go past 101 or test Free and Pro.
Limits Can Differ by Account
Anthropic does not publish this number, so it can change or vary by plan. Treat 100 as a soft warning sign, not a guarantee either way.
Images Use Up Usage Faster
Every image adds tokens to each later reply, so an image-heavy chat uses up a plan's usage faster.
Why Some Images Show "Upload Failed"
When we added 10 to 20 images at a time, roughly one in five showed "Upload failed" with a Retry link. Once, sending a message that still held a failed image lost the chat and put the draft back in the box. Check every thumbnail before you press send.
Retry or Remove
Click Retry on the thumbnail, or remove it and add the file again.
Count Before Sending
If the message says "20 images", make sure 20 thumbnails finished uploading.
How to Get Past Claude's Image Limits
Pick by what you are doing with the images.
Split Across Messages
Up to 20 per message. Label them (Image 1, Image 2) so you can refer to them later.
Combine Screenshots
Put related screenshots in one grid image. Current Claude models downsize images over 2576 px on the long edge, so keep the grid modest.
Start a New Chat
If a chat refuses more images or gets slow, ask Claude for a summary and paste it into a fresh chat.
Use Claude Code for Folders
Claude Code reads image files from your disk by path. In requests with more than 20 images, each image must be 2000 px or smaller.
Use the API for Batches
Up to 100 or 600 images per request depending on the model. The Files API avoids resending image bytes on every turn.
Shrink Before Uploading
Anything over 10 MB is refused on claude.ai. Claude downscales large photos anyway, so resizing to about 2500 px first loses little.
