How to Remove Images From a Claude Chat: What Works and What Deleting Really Does
There is no button to delete one image from a message you already sent in claude.ai. You can delete the whole chat, edit an earlier message to branch off, remove files from a Project, or rewind a Claude Code session.
If the image was sensitive, such as a passport scan, the deletion section below quotes Anthropic's retention rules, so you know how long it stays after you delete it.

Ways to Remove an Image From Claude, by Where It Is
Which option you have depends on whether the message is sent, which app you are in and whether the file lives in a Project.
Before Sending: Remove the Thumbnail
Until you press send, every attachment in the message box has its own remove button. This is the only point where one image can be taken out on its own.
After Sending: Delete the Whole Chat
A sent image cannot be removed by itself. Deleting the chat is the only way to take it out of claude.ai: open the chat's menu from the chat title or the sidebar and choose Delete.
Edit an Earlier Message
Editing a message from before the image starts a new branch from that point. The original branch, image included, stays in the chat, so this sets the image aside rather than deleting it.
Remove It From a Project
Files added to a Project's knowledge can be removed one at a time from the project's file list, without deleting any chats.
Rewind in Claude Code
Run /rewind, or press Esc twice on an empty prompt, pick the message before you pasted the image and choose Restore conversation.
Compact or Clear in Claude Code
/compact summarizes the session, and Claude Code's own many-image error suggests it or a new session. /clear starts a fresh session.
Removing Images Because the Chat Hit Its Image Limit?
A common reason people look for this: claude.ai refuses more images and Claude suggests deleting some first. Since one image can't be deleted, these work instead.
Start a New Chat With a Summary
Ask Claude to summarize the chat, then paste the summary and only the images you still need into a new chat.
Put Several Images in One PDF
One PDF counts as one attachment. It is the workaround Reddit users recommend most often when a chat is full.
Combine Screenshots Into a Grid
A 2 × 2 grid is a single image. Keep text large enough to stay readable after Claude resizes it.
Know the Per-Message Limit
claude.ai accepts 20 images per message. In our test, one chat on a Max plan held 101 images in total.

Gone From Your History Immediately
A deleted conversation disappears from your chat history as soon as you delete it.
Deleted From Back-End Storage Within 30 Days
Anthropic says deleted conversations are removed from its back-end storage systems within 30 days.
The Model Training Setting
If you allowed your chats to be used to improve Claude, de-identified data can stay in training pipelines for up to 5 years. A chat you delete is not used to train future models; training runs already under way are not undone.
Flagged Chats Are Kept Longer
If automated safety systems flag a chat as violating the Usage Policy, its inputs and outputs can be kept for up to 2 years.
Feedback Is Kept for 5 Years
A thumbs up or down, or a bug report, keeps the related data for 5 years. Don't rate a chat that contains a passport or ID.
Use Incognito for Sensitive Uploads
Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even when the model training setting is on.
How to Delete a Claude Chat That Contains an Image
Do this for every chat that holds the image. Deleting a chat removes all of its branches with it.
Find Every Copy
Search your chats for the conversation, and check whether you also added the file to a Project.
Open the Chat's Menu
Open the menu from the chat title or from the chat's entry in the sidebar.
Choose Delete and Confirm
The chat leaves your history at once and Anthropic's back end within 30 days.
Remove Project Files Too
If the image sits in a Project's knowledge, remove it from the project's file list as well.
